Alpe d'Huez

The cheaper alternative to the big name French resorts ?

The routedoctor first visited Alpe D'Huez as an impoverished student. The resort has expanded since the 1980s and even with poor snow in December 2014, the skiing rivals many big name French resorts.

The Folie Douce

Unlike the Val d'Isere namesake, this branch of the apres ski chain is reasonably priced and thankfully lacks the dreadful music and dancers that populate Val D. A laid back, sophisticated environment with good decor. Arrive at 12 for an early lunch in bad weather as there are a limited tables inside.

Many of the puddings and indeed the soup are served in glass jars

Tiramasu 6-50 A huge quiche 12 euros

Popular with the routedoctor's teenage daughter.

La Cremaillere

Situated near the tourist office and the base of the 'lobster pot' lift, this traditional Savoyarde restaurant quite correctly receives good reports on other travel websites. Booking is essential and please speak French ! Dinner for 2 - 60 euros. The tartiflette was enormous (14 euros) and enough to feed 2 people. Lamb takes 45 mins to cook which a good sign and the Cote de Boeuf for 2 people warrants a return. Outstanding.

La Cremaillere

Try the Bouquet du Comtat Cote de Rhone 10 euros for a half bottle.

The O Bar

In the same street , come here for a good burger at lunchtime. Run by a charming Englishwoman and good value.
