Berlin

I spent a few days at a meeting in Berlin two years ago - I was excited by the guide books but would not rush back. Yes, the area around the Brandenburg gate is as dramatic and beautiful as Vienna, but the remainder of the city was drab, and could have been any modern European city.

Some good points

1.The First Floor restaurant in the Hotel Palace - zoo underground stop Budapeststrasse- is outstanding but expensive - I think it still has its Michelin star.

2. Ka de We Department store - children will like the ceramic bears doing a handstand which seem to be the city's unofficial mascot.

3 Deutsches Historiches Museum - even has a good section on the world wars - after your visit go across the road to the opera house and have coffee and cake in the excellent cafe

Would I return - not in a hurry.
