Reno

I stayed with a friend in Reno but there are hotels attached to the many casinos to stay at.

Reno, "The biggest little city in the world" is pretty easy to get to - just under an hours flight from San Francisco or just over an hour from L.A

I went most recently in March 2009 but have also been in August. On arrival this time I breezed through the airport (note, there is not much to do in the airport so when you're leaving make sure you have a good book in your hand luggage!) met my friend and collected my suitcase no problem.

Always check the weather before you go as spring and autumn are pretty changable. Snow was forcast for the week and sure enough the next day we woke to a snow covered Reno, but the day I arrived my friend picked me up wearing in a t-shirt as it was so warm.

Reno is great if you like the great outdoors. Nearby is Lake Tahoe with great skiing in the winter, at lots of resorts all around the lake, and in the summer all kinds of watersports are available. The lake is incredibly clear and the surrounding mountains make it such a beautiful place. There are many bbq spots dotted around for use in the summer months and lots of walking trails to make use of.

Trukee is another great place to visit. Lots of little shops and some cafes. The Tahoe candle shop is a must for some great presents and they will gift wrap at no extra cost.

The Donner Mermorial State Park west of Trukee and also the Donner Lake are good to see too (actually in California). There are walks through the woods and interesting exhibitions in the memorial centre. There are loos here too and a gift shop.

In Reno there are some good restaurants in the casinos. I went to a great sushi bar in the Peppermill Casino I think, there are lots of others though.
